Friedman appears on Japanese television and is also a contributing columnist to Japanese music magazines and national newspapers.[23] Speaking Japanese, he became a regular member of the cast of TXN's musical TV program Hebimeta-san (ヘビメタさん) (anglicized as "Mr. Heavy-Metal") with Japanese idol Yoko Kumada until the show came to an end in 2005. Friedman had his own heavy metal TV program called Rock Fujiyama alongside Shelly, Ken Ayugai (Kenny Guy), Yorimasa Hisatake (Rock Ninja Yorimasa) and ex-Scanch member Rolly Teranishi from April 2006 until March 2007. From November till December 2005, he toured with singer Ami Suzuki on her "Suzuki Ami Around the World" live house tour, which took place in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.Friedman was featured on Jukebox, a television program in which Friedman and two Japanese people translate the lyrics of various English songs into understandable Japanese. He has also made guest appearances on the television programs Eigo de Shabera Night and Tamori Club.In 2008, Friedman played the role of Paul Weinberg, an English language teacher, in Isshin Inudou's Gou-Gou Datte Neko de Aru.[24]

Nel 2005 ha vinto un Japanese Academy Awards come miglior attrice debuttante, per la sua interpretazione in Swing Girls.[1] È conosciuta principalmente per aver interpretato il ruolo della protagonista nei live action Nodame Cantabile e Nodame Cantabile New Year Special in Europe, tratti dall'omonimo manga. Nel 2008 è stata eletta dalla rivista Vogue Japan donna dell'anno.[2]


Nel 2006 interpretò il ruolo della protagonista Megumi Noda in undici episodi della serie televisiva live action Nodame Cantabile. Per la sua interpretazione, la Ueno vinse il premio come miglior attrice al 51 Television Drama Academy Awards e il premio come miglior nuovo talento agli Élan d'or Awards. Nel 2008 interpretò anche il film per la televisione Nodame Cantabile New Year Special in Europe, che le valse il premio come miglior attrice all'International Drama Festival in TOKYO Awards 2008.


Sempre nel 2008, la Ueno fu nel cast del dorama Last Friends, per il quale ricevette cinque premi, tra i quali quello come miglior attrice non protagonista ai Nikkan Sports Drama Grand Prix.[3]
